Nana Yaw Adutwum is the Director of Policy for the United Party (UP)
The Director of Policy for the United Party (UP), Nana Yaw Adutwum has described the government’s intention to undertake a fresh SIM re-registration exercise as unproductive, urging a rethink of the approach.
Speaking during an interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday March 21,2026, he elaborated that the challenges from the previous 2022–2023 exercise, particularly data integrity issues and weak institutional coordination, should be addressed without restarting the entire process.
“I particularly say, where I sit, I don’t think the approach that the government is adopting is a productive one. I think that we can rather build on than restart the whole process,” he said.
He argued that building on the existing system would be more effective than beginning a new nationwide exercise. He also questioned the cost implications of the exercise, stating that government has yet to disclose how much public funds will be spent.

“I particularly say, where I sit, I don’t think the approach that the government is adopting is a productive one. I think that we can rather build on than restart the whole process,” he said.
Additionally, he suggested that mobile network operators should have been engaged to help refine and improve the process rather than restarting it entirely.
“So, I think that the telcos should have been brought to the table to rethink the process that we went through in 2022-2023 and fashion out new measures that can help improve that,” he said.
Adutwum further noted that the core issue driving the renewed exercise appears to be data mismatches between SIM registrations and Ghana Card details, which he believes can be resolved without a full reset.
“Because Sam George has not told us the budget or the public funds that we’re going to spend on doing that. I believe there is public fatigue in going through that process, long queue, sitting under scorching sun, just to get my SIM registered,” he added.
