The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Ghana and Partners have organised a workshop for University students and young professionals on how to write an effective proposal for conferences and presentations.

The workshop brought together 120 participants to learn and build upon their knowledge in writing a technical paper for conferences and presentations.

Dr Riverson Oppong, Chief Editor and Founder of the Global Energy Insight Journal, said in writing a good proposal for presentation it was imperative to first identify the problem on the subject matter and find out how it would affect the environment.

Dr Oppong told participants to conduct thorough research to identify possible challenges as far as proposal writing was concerned.

He stated that it was necessary for young professionals aspiring to write a technical paper for presentation to acquaint themselves with the rules of the topic to avoid deviation.

Dr Oppong advised the participants to always include abstract papers when writing and submitting technical proposals for presentation, because it gives a summary about the topic.

He said afterwards, the students must state the overall purpose of the topic, problems to be studied, experimental methodology, conclusions and references of the study.

Mr Ato Aidoo, Chairperson, SPE Ghana said the workshop was necessitated due to student paper competition organised all over Africa and beyond to write a technical paper for consideration.

He said the workshop was pivotal for young professionals and aspiring leaders who want to be prepared for the challenges in the oil and gas industry and beyond.

According to him, the workshop explores the role the country would play in the future of the energy and petroleum industry, covers the latest innovations, and unlocks Africa’s upstream potential.

He said SPE Ghana had realized that Ghanaian students did not do well in such competitions and as such there was the need to build their capacity to be abreast with the requisite knowledge in writing good proposals for conferences and presentations.

He said presenting a paper at conferences was an efficient and exciting forum in which students could share their findings of a study, adding that, presenting a paper to others at a conference requires, determining what type of presentation would best suit your material.
