The Social Security and National Trust (SSNIT) on Friday donated equipment and furniture worth GH¢50,000 to the Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) in Accra.

The equipment are a Binding Machine C250 Pro (gbc), Paper Cutter Rexel C1420, Cabinet Wooden (DZ86) Cherry, Bookshelf (ssiwk-00-lgn) S3117, four Desks, two Binding Combs, and a Heavy Duty Photocopier.

Corporate Affairs Manager at SSNIT, Eva Amegashie, who presented the items on behalf of the Trust, said they saw a Television documentary about the state of affairs of the Authority and were moved to assist them.

She said they believed in anything that deals with human resource development because “if we invest in areas that would help build human resource capacity of the people they would one day grow up to contribute to the Trust”.

She, therefore, expressed the hope that the items would go a long way to improve the Authority’s revenue generating activities.

Mr Micheal Attipoe, Director of National Commission on Culture and Board member of GhLA, who received the items on behalf of the Chairman of the Board, said the philosophy of SSNIT assisting the Authority is profound because education is the rock of every good foundation.

He said: “in Ghana, we have put up the good foundation for education but how to maintain it is the problem and it is about time we start working to reconnect our children to see books as their friends.”

He said the enthusiasm associated with going to library and reading in the early days is no longer there because we fail as a nation to maintain the facilities to entice the children.

Mr Attipoe announced that the GhLA has over the years been collaborating with international agencies, NGOs and public agencies on projects that would help to enhance services rendered to the public.

He said they were happy that SSNIT has joined their list of collaborators and thanked them for the items, which he said would help them establish Internet Café Facility at the Accra Central Library.

“On behalf of the Chairman and members of the Board, Management and staff of the Ghana Library Authority, we wish to extend our deepest gratitude to SSNIT for this gesture.

“We also thank the Director-General of SSNIT and the Corporate Affairs manager, who have shown keen interest in supporting the Authority,” he said and assured SSNIT that the equipment would be put to good use to improve upon the services rendered to their clientele in the Reference Department.
