SSNIT pensioners complain about poor treatment

Bekwai (Ash), July 21, GNA - The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) pensioners in the Bekwai Municipality have complained about what they say was the poor treatment by the Trust.

They accused SSNIT of not doing enough to help better their economic situation and live in dignity after years of service to their nation.

The pensioners were particularly not happy with the flat amount of GH¢10.00 which was recently added to their monthly pension, instead of the annual increment based on a percentage of one's annual total.

"Even with this GH¢10.00, there is a deduction of GH¢2.00," they added. These sentiments were contained in a statement signed by Mr A.K. Sarpong, Bekwai Municipal Chairman, National Pensioners Association.

The statement said it should not be lost on anyone that it was their little contributions to the pension scheme over the decades that had made SSNIT what 93it is now" - owning huge assets by way of big buildings, well equipped offices and decent conditions of service for its employees.

It also expressed dissatisfaction with office accommodation provided the association by the Trust.

The situation where such offices are located on the top floor of tall buildings, without taking into account their age, physical frailness and the difficulty of climbing the staircase, the pensioners said, was a mark of insensitivity to their welfare.
