Workers of the State Transport Corporation (STC) are strongly opposing the appointment of a third deputy managing director, describing it as an unnecessary expenditure of public funds.

According to the employees, the two current deputies are sufficient to manage the corporation's needs.

In a petition obtained by JoyNews, the workers argued that "The company has operated without a Deputy Managing Director for a considerable period; suggesting that the reduction in deputy managing directors will not adversely affect our operations."

The employees are urging the corporation to focus on acquiring more buses and addressing significant financial obligations, including settling over six million cedis in overdue pensions.

"It is imperative to emphasise the current challenges facing the company, particularly the dwindling fleet of operational buses. Presently, out of a total of 145 buses, only 39 are deemed roadworthy," the petition stated.

The workers attribute this situation to "the inferior quality of the Daewoo buses acquired in 2020, resulting in frequent repairs and maintenance issues."

Additionally, the petition highlighted severe financial issues, the report on myjoyonline.com said.

"The outstanding provident fund contributions and other statutory deductions are significantly overdue. The arrears include provident fund contributions overdue for about six years, Tier 2 arrears totaling six months, and SSNIT deductions exceeding six million Ghana cedis (GH¢6,000,000.00)," the petition added.

In a bid to have their demands met, the unionized staff have vowed to continue their protest, including barricading the office of the Deputy Managing Director, until the appointment is revoked.
