Sabie water supply system inaugurated

The Sabie Water Supply System in the Banda District has been inaugurated with a call on the community to ensure a clean environment to prevent contamination of water sources.

Mr Sampson Atakora, Brong-Ahafo Regional Chief Engineer of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), addressing a durbar prior to the inauguration on Sunday, said there was the need to ensure a good sanitation and environment.

He said the GH¢900,000.00 water supply deal, signed under a financial agreement between the Government of Ghana and the Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) of France for the implementation of the Peri-Urban Rural and Small Town Water Supply and Sanitation Project, covered a number of developmental areas.

Mr Atakora said the project included the construction of mechanized water systems, drilling of boreholes fitted with hand-pumps, construction of institutional latrines, construction of ‘sanimarts’, training of latrine artisans, hygiene education and sanitation promotion in communities and schools.

Mr Atakora said 15 systems were constructed under the project including two mechanized boreholes, two kilometres of transmission lines, 1.8 kilometre distribution lines, seven stand-pipes and two 59-KVA transformers with associated electrical works.

He said the Banda District Assembly is the project implementer, while CWSA facilitated various components of the project.

Mr Atakora said to ensure effective management of the system, a nine-member Sabie-based Water and Sanitation Management team was selected and given adequate training to enable it play its role.

He commended the Banda District Assembly, CWSA and other stakeholders for playing their various roles and called on WSMT to manage the system effectively for the benefit of the people.
