Sekondi, May 14, GNA - Sachet water producers within the Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Area have agreed to pay between 60,000 and 180,000 cedis with effect from May 31 this year for the collection and disposal of plastic water sachets in the metropolis.

The decision was arrived at following a series of meetings between the assembly, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Food and Drugs Board (FDB), the Ghana Standards Board (GSB), Fan Milk Ghana Limited and the Association of Sachet Water Producers on Monday. These were contained in a release signed by Mr. John Laste, of the Public Relations Department of the Assembly.

The release said the contribution would be paid into a special account at the Market Circle branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank in Takoradi and would be operated by the Waste Management Department of the Assembly. The Waste Management Department, according to the release would employ labourers to pick the discarded polythene scattered along the major streets and towns in the metropolis and sensitise the public on the proper use and handling of the product.

The meeting appealed to the assembly to intensify the arrest and prosecution of drivers who fail to provide litterbins in their vehicles and those who indiscriminately litter the metropolis.
