The University of Education, Winneba, (UEW) has denied suggestions that it violated the rights to academic freedom of the sacked Nigerian Professor. Austin Nwagbara.

The visiting Professor of English was sacked from the university after he was seen in a viral video allegedly inciting Nigerians against Ghanaians.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities in Nigeria has accused Ghanaian authorities of intimidating the professor and violating his right to academic freedom.

They warned that they will hold the authorities at UEW sorely responsible if anything untoward happens to Prof. Nwagbara.

But the Public Relations Officer of the University of Education, Winneba, Ernest Azutiga has dismissed the accusations.

“We know what academics do when we want to justify their expressions or activities in the context of academic freedom. They provide facts, evidence to the claim that they make, if it turns out that they made claims without basis more so the claims denigrate other people or organization then certainly you’ve moved out of the realm academic freedom and you’re talking something else.

He added: “The second thing is that the professor himself admits that the content of the video does not sit well with the image of any institution and it is not the best thing that a professor of his caliber should do so clearly I don’t see why they are talking about academic freedom.”
