The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Sagnarigu in the Northern Region, Madam Mariam Iddrisu has been selected among the leadership of Pan African Council of REFELA for 2019-2021 at its recently held General Assembly held at Marrakesh, Morocco.
She would be working closely with Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, First Lady of the Republic of Ghana and NGOs working in the area of Women Empowerment and Child Protection towards the promotion and implementation of the four main campaigns in Ghana.
REFELA supports the development of Women leadership within African city, MMDAs/Electoral Areas, as well as the inclusion of the concerns of Women in the definition and implementation of African city and Local government’s policies and strategies.
As her part of her task, the MCE who is passionate about issues of women and children would establish programs to meet five most important mandates in Ghana including establishment of RAFELA- GHANA CHPATER, Campaign on Ghana against street children, Campaign on African cities zero tolerance to Violence against women, Campaign on African cities favourably for economic empowerment of women and in ncrease women political participation in Ghana
Madam Iddrisu Mariam has already kick-started the project by building a database on all female MMDCEs and Assembly Women, both elected and appointed in Ghana who form the membership of RAFELA.
An enthusiastic MCE disclosed that the association has national chapters that are called to be the Gender Equality Committee of the national associations of local and sub-national governments in each African country similar to the National Association of Local Authorities (NALAG).
“We are now working on a date for the inauguration of RAFELA-Ghana Chapter by United Cities and Local Government of Africa (UCLGA)” she revealed.
