Sam George touts cheaper data, broadband and improved DStv value

Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George has pointed to reductions in the cost of digital services as part of the government’s efforts to ease the financial burden on Ghanaian households.

According to the Minister, engagements between his Ministry and telecommunications and pay-TV operators have secured better value for consumers, ranging from improved DStv packages to increased mobile data allocations and lower fixed broadband prices.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, September 7, 2026, George said the benefits of the negotiations had been sustained, particularly in the pay-TV sector.

He cited the enhanced-value DStv packages introduced in October 2025, which he said had remained in place despite earlier concerns that the changes could eventually be reversed.

“Despite predictions that the gains would be quietly reversed, prices have held, value has been sustained, and Ghanaian households have kept the benefit of that negotiation. That is what accountability looks like: a promise made, and a promise kept,” he said.

George also highlighted changes secured through engagements with mobile network operators in 2025.

He said MTN increased the data volumes on its bundles by 15 per cent, while Telecel and AirtelTigo each increased their data allocations by 10 per cent.

The Minister said the changes were aimed at ensuring that consumers received more value for the money they spend on digital services.

He further disclosed that continued discussions with the telecommunications industry this year had resulted in MTN reducing the prices of its fibre broadband services by as much as 70 per cent.

Under the new pricing, he said, MTN’s 100 Mbps unlimited package had been reduced from GH¢987 to GH¢299 per month.

George said the reduction demonstrated what could be achieved when the government engaged service providers with the interests of consumers in mind.

“This is the return of a Ministry that understands this industry from the inside and negotiates on behalf of the Ghanaian consumer, not on behalf of the operators,” he added.
