The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has addressed reports alleging that he spent thousands of dollars of the party’s funds on a lavish trip to Miami, USA, with his wife.
In an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam programme on Monday, July 1, 2024, Gyamfi clarified that the video being used as evidence against him is old. He acknowledged having visited Miami in the past but denied familiarity with the hotel he is accused of spending $3,000 per night at and denied receiving $42,000 from the party.
Gyamfi refuted the claim that he would be in Miami for two weeks, noting that he has not left Ghana recently.
"On Saturday, I was at Holy Spirit Cathedral for Mawuena Trebarh’s funeral. So, how could I have been chilling in Miami? On Sunday, I was at Suame for the regional organizer for Ashanti, Chairman Alhassan’s mother’s funeral. Even before that, on Wednesday, I was in Accra hosting NDC 360 from our studios. Everyone watched me. I was on set with Honourable Jinapor discussing the power sector and Free SHS. On Thursday, I was in the High Court supporting my good brother and friend, the minority leader, Honourable Ato Forson. So, when could I have been in Miami at an expensive hotel?" Gyamfi asked.
He dismissed the allegations as "ridiculous" and "nonsensical," stating that no sane person would believe them. Gyamfi stressed that he had never stayed at the hotel mentioned and had not been in Miami for two weeks. He confirmed that the video circulating was from a past trip to Miami with his wife shortly after their marriage.
The NDC communications officer claimed that the story was an attempt to tarnish his reputation due to his criticisms of the government. He announced plans to take legal action against the media houses that published the story.
