The Ghana Police Service has stated that none of their vehicles were used in an armed robbery attack at Sankore in the Brong Ahafo region as being circulated in the media.

According to the police, on 1 April 2018, a police patrol team based at Kwapong whilst on their normal patrol duties was obstructed and attacked by some thugs believed to be residents of Sankore.

A statement signed by the Director-General of the Public Affairs Department of the Ghana Police Service, ACP David Eklu, which was released on 6 April 2018, said in the process the mob held the police driver behind the steering wheel and as a result the vehicle veered off the road and ran into a ditch.

It added that, the policemen sensing danger due to the large number of thugs retreated to the Sankore Police Station leaving the service vehicle behind and reinforcements were called in and the vehicle was retrieved and taken to Sankore Police Station.

“It is imperative to know that, though there was some sort of attack on the police, the thugs on that day did not seize the police vehicle as alleged nor did they use the vehicle for any subsequent robbery. The police and the military are currently in control of the security situation at Sankore town. It is also instructive to know that nobody has reported any robbery involving the usage of any police vehicle on that date,” the release stressed.

So far three persons believed to be connected to the attack have been arrested and remanded in prison custody by a Sunyani Circuit Court to appear on Tuesday 10 April 2018.

The law enforcement agency further revealed that a manhunt has also been launched by the Regional Police Command to arrest the remaining suspects involved in the attack.

The police entreated the media to cross check information with its Public Affairs Department before reporting issues to avoid causing fear and alarm.

They also assured residents of Sankore and its environs that measures have been put in place to maintain the peace in the community.
