Save us from filth - Residents appeal to Minister

Kumasi, Nov 18, GNA - Residents of Asuoyeboah, a suburb of Kumasi have appealed to Dr Richard Anane, Minister of Roads and Highways to prevail upon the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to save them from being engulfed by filth.

According to Mr Philip Brobbey, the assemblyman for Asuoyeboah, the KMA did not provide the area with refuse containers.

He said several meetings with and appeals to the Waste Management Department of the KMA did not yield positive results.

The assemblyman made the appeal at a meeting the Minister, who is also Member of Parliament for Bantama held with the chiefs and people of Asuoyeboah on Sunday.

Mr Brobbey said the situation had resulted in the dumping of refuse indiscriminately and that the only refuse dump had grown into a mountain posing health hazard to the people.

Dr Anane said government was improving transportation throughout the country to facilitate economic development.

He cited the construction of the interchange at Asafo Sofoline and Suame Roundabouts and the dual carriage roads from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to Abuakwa and Atimatim to the Suame Roundabout as works in progress.

Dr Anane expressed regretted that Kumasi now lagged behind Accra by far in respect with facelift due to long neglect and said the government was determine to bridge this wide gap.

Dr Anane said already streetlights were being provided in the major streets in the metropolis while the drainage system and the rehabilitation of streets in the various communities was on course.

He said the government had introduced the Nurse-Aid concept whereby persons who had worked for about two years in the health sector qualified to enter Nurses Training College after sitting the entrance examination.

Mr George Kofi Adjei, The Bantama constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had become desperate in its bid to recapture power.

He said consequently, the NDC had resorted to every means possible to detract the attention of Ghanaians from the good work the government was doing.

Mr Adjei said the mass cocoa spraying exercise and the 'high tech' aimed at revamping the cocoa industry was yielding positive results.

He said government intended to give financial assistance to farmers to enable them to build houses.

Dr Anane therefore appealed to the people to support the government and to retain the NPP in power to enable the party to continue with its good works.

Nana Yaw Mensah, chief of Asuoyeboah, appealed to the government to provide the M/A primary school in Kumasi with a new block of classrooms to facilitate teaching and learning. GNA
