Savelugu mayhem ‘regrettable’ – Boahen

The Deputy General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has condemned the current unrest in Savelugu following the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Hajia Ayishetu Seidu as Municipal Chief Executive for the area.

The youth of the NPP are against the MCE’s nomination because they claim she’s not a party member. Heavy security personnel have remained in the area following the disturbances by the youth that resulted in a clash with the police on Thursday, 15 June 2017.

The police fired warning shots to disperse the youth that massed up in front of the district assembly office to prevent the MCE from assessing her office.

But Nana Obiri Boahen, in an interview with Class News’ Kwesi Parker-Wilson, said the development was extremely unfortunate and assured that the party leadership will move in to resolve the problem.

He said: “This is something some of us are very much worried, extremely worried about the situation. I think that it’s a human society and sociologists will tell you that in every society you have deviants, so it’s unfortunate and quite regrettable that the party is going through such situation. Within a matter of a few days, I will go to Savelugu on a fact finding mission, interact with the agitators, interact with the Municipal Chief Executives, interact with stakeholders, convey the outcome to the leadership of the party and we draw the conclusion for us to find solution to the seeming problem prevailing over there. So we acknowledge that it’s a blight on the part of the leadership of the party, but I can assure you that we have decided to move into action.”

Mr Boahen added: “For me, it’s a clear indication of what I have been maintaining all these years that we need to vote to elect our DCEs and MCEs. The signs are such that with the situation on the ground, we need to vote to elect our DCEs.”
