Sawla: Man remanded for allegedly butchering wife to death

The Bole Magistrate Court presided over by His Worship Andrews Cudjoe has remanded Yikatey Somatey, a 60-year-old farmer from Gando in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah region into prison custody for allegedly butchering his wife to death.

He is to reappear on July 15, 2020.

Presenting the facts of the case to the Bole court, police prosecutor, Chief inspector Awuni revealed, the deceased Bora Bonbiatey, 57, was married to the accused.

He said, the accused has always alleged his wife has been cheating on him with another man whose identity is not known.

He said, the accused then decided to lure his wife to the bush under the pretense of performing a family ritual.

Chief inspector Awuni said while in the bush, the suspect allegedly poured pepper in the woman’s eyes and inflicted cutlass wounds on her head till she died.

He narrated, realizing the woman was dead, the accused took to his heels leaving the woman in a pool of blood in the bush.

The matter was reported to the Sawla District police command by an uncle of the deceased leading to the arrest of Yikatey Somatey.

Police immediately moved to the scene and saw the deceased lying in a pool of blood.

She was rushed to the Sawla clinic where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The accused has been charged with murder contrary to section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 29 of 1960.

Meanwhile, the body has since been released to the family for burial.

The Sawla District Police Commander ASP Degraft Armah in an interview cautioned residents against taking the laws into their own hands.

He urged residents to see the police as their friend and report cases for the law to deal with offenders.
