Sawla-Tuna inaugurates peace committee

Sawla (N/R), Dec. 26, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District at the weekend formed a five-member Inter-Party Peace dialogue committee in the area aimed at promoting peace in the 2012 general elections.

Mr Robert Dampare, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Director of the NCCE who inaugurated the Committee, stressed the need for peace before and after the 2012 elections and appealed to members to work collectively to promote peace. The members of the committee are Rev Father David Bakari of the Sawla Catholic Church, Chairman, Mr Michael Langmagne of Catholic Youth Association, Organiser, Madam Dordam Wilifred, Treasurer, Robert Dampare, NCCE District Director, Secretary and a member yet to be decided by the security agencies. Mr Dampare said what eluded Africa countries in recent times was peace and that it was necessary for Ghana to ensure a violence free elections in 2012 so that the country would remain a model of democracy in Africa.

Mr Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Deputy Coordinating Director who swore committee members into office, advised them to work tireless to ensure that the district was violent free before and after the 2012 elections.

He said democracy was costly but its fruits were sweet and that in the absence of the democracy the minority was always represented, which always generates chaos and stressed the need for continued peace in the country. He said peace was a collective responsibility, which should start from the home, community, District and the National level and commended the people in the District for embracing peace.

The Rev Father Bakari assured the people that the committee would live up to expectation to justify the confidence reposed in them saying, “Apart from peace being a civic responsibility, it is also a religious responsibility and we will contribute our quota towards peace in the coming elections”.
