Chiraa(B/A),Nov.11, GNA - Teachers and pupils of the Methodist Primary and Junior Secondary School at Chiraa in Brong Ahafo have appealed to the traditional authorities, police and the District Directorate of Education to help curb a practice by residents that had jeopardized sound teaching and learning in the school.
The school, which has no watchman, the residents have virtually turned the classrooms into their places of convenience, bedrooms and wee smokers' dens.
"We find used condoms, pieces of smoked wee and human excreta on the floor of our classrooms every morning, compelling the children to spend a greater part of the morning washing and cleaning the classrooms because the stench is unbearable," one of the teachers told the Ghana News Agency.
Another teacher complained that the unscrupulous perpetrators not only ease themselves in the classrooms and in the compound but also smear the teachers' tables, chairs and the chalkboards with the excreta. Mrs. Agnes Adakora, Headmistress, said the problem had existed for a long time and contacts made to the authorities to halt the practice had not received any positive response.
She said anytime a culprit was arrested and being sent to the police station, the other residents would hoot and jeer at the teachers and the police.
The headmistress called for a drastic action to be taken to make the school safe and an improvement in sanitation to avoid an epidemic among the pupils.
