School appeals to Government to reclaim land from encroachers

Weija (GAR), July 29, GNA - The Institute of Technical Supervision (ITS) on Friday appealed to government to help it reclaim its lands from private developers in order not to hamper the future expansion of the School.

The Institute also appealed to government to support it financially as fees collected from students which served as its main source of funding were not enough to efficiently run the institute financially.

Mr John Welbeck, Principal of ITS, who was speaking at the graduation ceremony of 22 Technical Supervisors, also appealed to the Ga South Municipal Assembly to help stop the proliferation of churches and its accompanying noise within the vicinity of the Institute. The supervisors who were made up of 15 senior officers and seven junior officers from both government and private organizations undertook a five-month intensive Technical Supervisory Management Course.

Some of the subjects taught were techniques in Feasibility Studies, the Labour Act, Effective Practice of Supervision, English Language, Costing and Estimation of Engineering works, Appraisal Procedures and Conflict Management. He expressed his appreciation to the Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA) for donating a generator and a Toyota Land Cruiser to the Institute and urged other corporate entities to emulate them.

Mr Sheriff Otto Dodoo, Chief Executive Officer, Ga South Municipal Assembly, appealed to corporate organisations to sponsor their staff, who qualified to undertake the course in order to improve their managerial and technical skills at their work places. He urged workers to avoid laziness, apathy and lateness to work in order to increase productivity which would then translate into increased wages and salaries.

Mr Dodoo called on the Office of the Head of Civil Service under whose jurisdiction ITS operates, to commit the necessary resources into upgrading infrastructure of the School.

"Public and private sector institutions which have benefitted from the products of the Institute should also come to its aid." He pledged the Assembly's commitment towards tackling all the challenges enumerated by the Principal of the Institute. Alhaji Hamidu Chodi, Director of Administration, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, who was the Guest Speaker, educated them on some of the responsibilities of supervisors and urged them to avoid favouritism in all their dealings with subordinates.

"I will urge you to show boldness in reprimanding your subordinates and also be able to deal with their grievances," he said. Alhaji Hamidu said the country needed confident, purposeful and well-motivated individuals in supervisory grades to enable it achieve its goals and developmental objectives. 29 July 11
