Tarkwa, June 24, GNA - Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, one of the contestants in the Presidential Primaries of the New Patriotic Party, has said Ghana needs Science-oriented leaders to transform its fortunes. He said the globalization process required nations to focus on Science and Technology and its related fields so the necessary investment should be made to rapidly transform the economy.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said these when he met the Tarkwa-Nsuaem delegates of the NPP, at Tarkwa, on Thursday, as part of his tour of the Western Region.

He said the excessive reliance on Agriculture and other sectors of the economy to the detriment of Science and Technology could slow the country's quest for a middle income nation. "Science and Technology are the new keys to rapid development and every nation must make conscious efforts at harnessing their advantages," he stressed.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng expressed his dissatisfaction at the continual importation of mining equipment and technology when the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) could be contracted to provide such facilities and skills.

"Our youth are industrious and those in the tertiary institutions when empowered with the requisite resources could transform the nation and assist it to overcome its development challenges."

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said UMaT was established purposely for the training of graduates for the mining industry and with some significant investments the products of the university could be transformed from knowledge-seeking individuals to solution-providing individuals and groups. He appealed to the delegates to vote for him during the party's congress in August this year. 24 June 10
