Second Phase Of Kumasi Telecom Project Starts

Kumasi, --(Ash) 11 June A sod-cutting ceremony was performed in Kumasi today to mark the beginning of work on the second phase of the Telecommunication expansion project in the metropolis. The project designed to expand the direct exchange telephone lines at the Kumasi main exchange from 10,000 to 15,000, is estimated at 4.1 million dollars. It is being undertaken by Marubeni Corporation of Japan and scheduled to be completed in December this year. Mr. Daniel Ohene Agyekum, Ashanti Regional Minister observed that the introduction of the Telecommunications Reform Policy has helped improve the Ghana Telecom significantly. He said Ghana Telecom has not rpt not only doubled the number of telephone lines in Ashanti over the past two years but has also made it possible for rural communities to enjoy modern telephone facilities. He expressed satisfaction that the expansion was taking place at a time the government had placed high premium on attracting foreign investments. Mr. Raphael K. Bukari, Ashanti Regional Director of Telecom, announced that the 10,000 lines at the Kumasi main exchange had been fully subscribed. He expressed the commitment of Ghana Telecom to provide the necessary infrastructure and services to meet the needs of the country. Brigadier H. K. Anyidoho, Two Brigade Commander and Chairman of the Board of Telecom who presided, said telecommunication is the live- line of any nation. Nana Aboagye Agyei the Second, Paramount Chief of Ejisu and a member of the Council of State, represented the Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware the Second.
