Second Term Not Automatic – Kufuor

FORMER PRESIDENT John Agyekum Kufuor has made mockery of the National Democratic Congress (NDC’s) passionate call on Ghanaians to renew their mandate in political power in the December polls, saying “second term in political office is not automatic.”

After failing woefully to perform during their first term in office, he said the NDC led by President Mahama, morally did not have the right to ask Ghanaians to renew their mandate.

“What does the NDC need another four years in political office for?” Mr. Kufuor, who stayed in government for eight years, asked pointing out that he was retained in political office for the second term due to his programmes which enhanced the lives of the people.

Former President Kufuor made the remarks when he joined the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and his Samira and other NPP members to pray with Muslims in the city at the Kumasi Central Mosque on Saturday.

Still not feeling comfortable with the NDC’s call for re-election, he said a party or government was given a second term in political office based on the performance and achievements of that particular government which bettered the lives of the voters during its first term in office.

Mr. Kufuor stated that it was only when the electorate were satisfied with a government’s performance that they renewed its mandate to continue with its good works, stating “the NDC should not make it seem like second term in office for a sitting government is automatic or constitutional right.”

In the NDC government’s case, the former President said the party had nothing to show Ghanaians which they could use as their trump card for continual stay in political office.

According to him, after failing woefully to perform in the last four years; a situation which had brought about adverse hardships on the populace, he was surprised that the NDC were combing the country, seeking another term in political office.

He lamented that the various social intervention programmes which he introduced like the NHIS, School Feeding Programme and other programmes were being endangered now due to the NDCs bad leadership.

Ex-President Kufuor therefore told the NDC to stop wasting the ears of Ghanaians with their fake promises, telling them in the face that the NDC had nothing in its sleeves to help transform Ghana.

The ex-Ghana leader who sounded like making mockery of the NDCs re-election bid said “even Mr. Rawlings who formed the NDC has openly stated that the NDC government is bad so they should be kicked out of office.”

Mr. Kufuor therefore asked the NDC supporters across the country to leave the party and join the NPP which has better programmes to lead Ghana to the Promised Land soon for the people to enjoy.

Led by the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Abdul Mumin Haruna, the Imams and Muslim clerics in the region recited holy Quran verses to ensure peaceful polls in Ghana this year.

A member of the organizing team of the historic event and a leading youth member of the NPP, Manaf Ibrahim said prayers were also said to ensure that the NPP won the coming polls to implement their programmes to transform the country.
