...As Anonymous Callers Threaten Attack

Security has reportedly been tightened in and around the premises of Volta Star Radio a regional community FM –Station run by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation in the Volta regional capital,Ho. The move follows fears of attacks by armed robbers on the station.

Suspected criminal elements had earlier called the Station and warned of an imminent attack. The Ho District Police Commander, Mr Nicholas Blewusi, is quoted as telling News-Agency Sources that the security agencies had been placed on the alert following the threats of attacks on certain individuals and institutions in the Ho township.

Superintendent Of Police, Blewusi said the safe-guards among others include the strengthening of security at entry points to Ho, night patrols and the re-organisation of community watch committees.

Residents of Ho have been assured that although earlier threats had not been carried out, the security agencies were leaving nothing to chance and appealed for public co-operation in dealing with the threats.

The threats have so far caught the attention of the District Security Committee (DISEC) which has been holding a series of meetings to come out with strategies to deal effectively with incidents of armed robberies and other criminal activities in the Volta Regional Capital.

The DISEC has also held meetings with management of hotels, private hospitals and a cross section of the business community to educate them on how to coordinate their activities among themselves and the security agencies in response to armed robbery attacks.

Volta Star radio VSR received three calls on Thursday evening from some alleged armed robbers between 6.20 p.m. and 6:30 pm. One of the callers said over the telephone "Hi jack, you heard what my brother is saying, we are coming," without specifying when.

The management of the Station say the motive for the threat is unclear because the VSR does not have money, which armed robbers normally look out for.
