Security guard convicted for possessing Marijuana

An Accra Circuit Court has convicted Eric Awuni, a Security guard for use of Narcotic drug without lawful authority.

The court convicted Eric on his own plea and the judge deferred sentencing to February 15, for the prosecution to produce the results of the exhibits.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mawunyo Nanegbe told the court that the convict was a security guard with Intercom Security and works at Vermont Compound at the American Embassy in Cantonments.

He said on January 23, at about 1:36 pm, the convict rang the doorbell to the residence of one Mr Kevin Whitson, the Regional Security Officer located within the American Embassy compound.

She said when Kevin came out, Eric approached and told him that he was advising him to quit smoking cigarettes as it could kill.

The Prosecution said the convict then offered to sell Kevin Marijuana, which Eric claimed would be much beneficial to his health.

On January 25, when Eric reported to work, he was asked to wait after the close of work by Kevin to which Officers from the Narcotic Control Board, Drug law Enforcement Unit, Drug Enforcement of the United States of America Embassy were invited to witness an interrogation process involving the convict.

During the interrogation, Eric admitted having approached the Kevin with the request to sell cannabis to him for use instead of the cigarette he used to smoke.

“He was re-arrested and brought to the CID Headquarters for investigations, where Eric again admitted in his cautioned statement having approached Kevin to offer him Marijuana if he will stop smoking cigarettes,” he added.

DSP Nanegbe said a wooden structure, the convict sleeps in around the Kumordjie Hospital, Cantonments was searched and in the process, one wrap and partly smoked dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, a narcotic drug were found on a table in the room.

The Prosecution said, when questioned, he claimed ownership of the exhibit and he alleged that he buys the suspected dried leaves from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle for his personal use.

The convict led the Police to a location behind the Vodafone Headquarters but could not identify the one he claimed he allegedly bought the cannabis from.

The exhibit has been forwarded to the crime laboratory for analysis and report.
