The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has criticised the government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for its attempts to offer tax waivers worth $334 million to 42 private companies.

In a post shared on social media on Friday, May 17, 2024, the MP stated that while the government is asking the Parliament of Ghana to approve these waivers, it is simultaneously seeking approval for a $150 million World Bank IDA loan.

He indicated that the tax waiver given to one of the entities, Santuo Oil Refinery, alone is worth more than the World Bank loan the government is seeking.

“The NPP Government is in Parliament asking for approval of a $150 million IDA loan. Yet, the Government is asking the same Parliament to waive as much as $334 million in taxes in favour of some 42 private companies.

“One company, Santuo Oil Refinery, alone is to be gifted $164.6 million in tax waivers. This is insane,” he wrote.

The MP also shared images of a supposed document from parliament, titled “Order Paper for the Emergency Sitting of Parliament,” dated ‘Friday, 17th May 2024,’ which showed the list of companies being granted the tax waivers.
