Mampong (Ash), Sept 24, GNA - The Sekyereman Union, comprising citizens from the Sekyere East and West districts of Ashanti resident in Parlemo, Italy, has presented items worth about 4.5 million cedis to the Asante-Mampong Babies Home and Westphalia Children's Village at Oyoko, near Effiduase in Ashanti.
The Mampong Babies Home received eight bags of rice, one used deep freezer, two used mattresses, five bags of sugar, and other provisions. Mr Daniel Bobie Manu, the union's chairman, who presented the items, said they were their humble contribution towards the upkeep of the home and hoped they would help ease a little bit of the pressure on the home.
Miss Grace Lamptey, Supervisor of the Home, who received the items, said the home, which is a joint venture between the government and the Anglican Diocese of Kumasi, takes care of babies who lose their mothers on the day of delivery and who are mostly settler farmers, and babies of mental patients.
Miss Lamptey disclosed that World Vision International is assisting them in running a poultry farm to ensure the protein requirements of the babies and appealed to the union to help construct an isolation block for the home.
At Oyoko, the Westphalia Children's Village received a similar donation, and Mr Francis Kwabena Asumadu, the Programme Co-ordinator, said the village caters for children from three years to 22 years.
He said it was gratifying to note that Sekyere citizens outside the country have realised the need to support the village and hoped they will in future support the village with a structure to be named after the union.
