Damongo (Northern Region) 13 Jan. '99

The government has directed district assemblies to make a special allocation from their share of the common fund to promote and sustain self-help development initiatives in rural areas.

Mr Steve de-Graft Safo, West Gonja District Chief Executive, at the first ordinary meeting of the district assembly at Damongo on Monday said this is in addition to other interventions like the rural housing improvement scheme and the poverty alleviation programme.

He urged the assembly members to encourage their communities to take advantage of these schemes.

The Assembly is discussing plans for increased revenue mobilisation, the medium term development plans for the district and the programme of action for this year.

Mr de-Graft Safo said the District Assembly in conjunction with the German Agency for Technical Co-operation (GTZ) is carrying out a study on the industrial potentials of the district especially in the establishment of viable local craft enterprises to promote tourism.
