Accra, June 18, GNA - An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Friday sentenced Edward Akrofi, unemployed, to four years' imprisonment in hard labour for defrauding a sales girl at the diplomatic shop at Airport Residential Area of 2.2 million cedis.

The tribunal, chaired by Mr Charles Nyewolema, ordered that the accused person's property should be offered for sale to defray the debt. Akrofi, 33, pleaded not guilty to defrauding Madam Helen Agbadornu by false pretences.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Patrick Sarpong said Akrofi, who is unemployed, has styled himself as a managing director of E & G Ghana Limited, importers and exporters.

He said in February, last year, Helen, who was travelling to Akuse, met Akrofi in the same vehicle and, through conversation, became friends. Akrofi then started visiting her in the office.

ASP Sarpong said sometime in March, last year, Akrofi showed an invoice to Helen and told her that he was clearing goods, including a Tico saloon car, from the harbour and that, Helen should pay 2,200,000 cedis for the car.

The prosecutor said after the payment was made, Akrofi stopped going to Helen's office.

When all efforts to secure the car seemed futile, Akrofi went to the house of the complainant at Adenta to demand more money.

"But he was arrested and a report was made to the police," ASP Sarpong said.
