Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has accused top officials in the police service of fuelling the high rate of robberies and attacks on police personnel in recent times.

According to him, criminals in the country are at liberty to mete out their various malicious activities, more so attack some police officials owing to the fact that they have ‘bought’ some personalities in the police service who they know will protect and defend them at all cost regardless of the degree of harm they cause during their raids.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam Show Tuesday January 30, Mr. Agyapong maintained that the recent Kwabenya issue for instance under no circumstance should have occurred but for the ‘foolish’ actions of leadership in the police service.

“Top police officers in the country should be able to handle the issues and bring solutions, rather, top officials are the ones backing the criminals and encouraging them to do those foolish things, engage in criminal activities. That’s why they have the nerves to go there and kill the young officers, yes I have evidence.

These are issues we must discuss. It is very serious. The remote cause is the impunity land guards and criminals have because when the issues are reported to the police, they buy all the police officers, they are protected otherwise, they will not have the nerves to go the police station to do this because they know they’ll eventually be set free. The top is rotten, I tell you. What nonsense? Why will you collaborate with criminals and give them the chance to kill the right citizens? I’m not afraid of them,” he posited.

For him, the Ghanaian police system should not even be considered when matters of security are being spoken of because the ‘protectors’ themselves have been compromised.

“When the Assin South MP was given an order by the court to build a wall around his church, policemen went to beat him up. I have pictures showing policemen eating and dining with armed robbers, when we talk about police, don’t talk about Ghana police”, he said.

Recent attacks particularly on police personnel in the country have raised a number of security concerns with many questioning the safety of Ghanaians if the ‘guardians’ of the country; the police are themselves being attacked and killed.

Most recently, a cop at the Kwabenya Police Station in Accra was killed when a gang of robbers attacked to free a number of suspects detained at the station.

While investigations are underway, about 12 suspects have already been arrested in connection with the robbery and are before the court for investigations.
