Senya Beraku Youth Protest Protacted Chieftaincy Dispute

Thu, 14 Aug 1997 Source: --

Senya Beraku(C/R), Aug 13, - A large number of citizens of Senya Beraku in the Central region, mostly young men and women, on Tuesday angrily protested against the prolonged chieftaincy dispute which has stalled the town's development for decades. This prompted Alhaji Baba Lamin Abu-Sadat, Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, to meet separately with members of the two Asafo companies in the town to find ways of resolving the impasse and bringing peace to the area. The youth who attended the Asafo Number One meeting lamented that the protracted chieftaincy dispute had left the link road between Awutu and Senya as well as streets in Senya township in a deplorable state. Primary schools in the town have also had their roofings destroyed while parts of the blocks are crying for urgent rehabilitation to prevent them from collapsing. The people, therefore, appealed to the government through the MP to do all it can to unite the two factions to ensure effective mobilization of all manpower and material resources for development. They also appealed to the Central Region House of Chiefs to expedite action on the dispute now pending before it to ensure lasting peace in the area. Earlier at both meetings, Supi Kofi Nyarko and Opanin Kofi Tawiah, both of Asafo Number Two, and Mr Nicholas Tetteh, leader of the Asafo Number One Company, had expressed the willingness of the two groups to smoke the peace pipe. The leaders assured Alhaji Abu Sadat and the government of their cooperation to ensure peace and stability to pave way for the celebration of their forthcoming 'Akomasi' festival. Mr Tetteh, however, suggested that to ensure absolute peace during the festival, chiefs from both factions should not be allowed to organize durbars. He suggested that the youth could organize public forums to discuss matters affecting the social and economic development of the town. The MP expressed appreciation at the warm reception and cooperation accorded him and his entourage and advised them to cooperate with the government in its determination to bring peace and stability to the area. Alhaji Abu-Sadat hoped the two groups would maintain their pledge to ensure amicable settlement of the dispute to pave way for the development of the town.
