Accra, Aug. 18, GNA - Mr. Danilo Vucetic, Special Envoy of Serbian President Boris Tadic, on Wednesday requested Ghana's support against Kosovo's unilateral proclamation to secede from Serbia.

He said Serbian Government considered the proclamation a problem and if not well managed by United Nations (UN) General Assembly, it could affect other countries especially in Africa where there were many secessionist groups.

Mr. Vucetic made the request when he called on Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in Accra.

He said though the UN had made its position clear on the issue that the declaration was not in contravention of international law, the Serbian Government found it to be in a bad taste.

Mr. Vucetic said Serbian Government had made it clear that it would not recognise Kosovo's independence since that territory was part of Serbia.

He pointed out that Serbia was prepared to resolve the matter peacefully through diplomacy and called for Ghana's support during deliberations on the issue at the UN General Assembly.

Alhaji Mumuni traced the long standing relationship between Ghana and Serbia at higher levels and said both countries shared common value of protecting each others' territorial integrity.

He said the UN was tasked to solve the Kosovo crisis, and Ghana being a member of the UN refrained from intervening until the UN had taken a decision on the issue.

Alhaji Mumuni said Ghana would abide by the UN consensus on the issue, and gave the assurance that President John Evans Atta Mills would be briefed on the request.
