Seventeen fishermen in Gomoa West get outboard motors

Apam (C/R), July 28, GNA - Seventeen outboard motors at a total cost of GH¢83,300 had been distributed to fishermen in Gomoa West District on a hire purchase.

The beneficiaries deposited half of the cost whilst the rest would be spread over 12 months.

Addressing the beneficiaries at Apam Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, District Chief Executive, appealed to fishermen to form watchdog committees to ensure that their colleagues did not use unauthorised methods for fishing.

He appealed to the fishermen to refrain from engaging in activities which could destroy the industry.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah said no amount of efforts by the government to protect the sea and water bodies could yield good results if fishermen did not cooperate.

He said the government was in the process of enacting laws to ban pair-trawling and other bad fishing methods such as using light for fishing and fishing with chemicals and explosives.

Mr Ebenezer Crentsil, Secretary of the Apam Landing Beach Committee through which the machines were channelled, appealed to the government to increase allocation to Apam as majority of fishermen in the area were in need of outboard motors.

He urged the beneficiaries to pay back in time for others also to benefit from the service.
