Several people arrested at Akwatia

Akwatia (E/R), Dec. 16, GNA - Several persons were arrested in a police- cum military operation at Akwatia in the early hours of Tuesday. Those arrested were suspected to be involved in the disruption of the December general elections at six polling stations at Akwatia, where 11 ballot boxes and election materials were vandalized. A large number of policemen and soldiers were involved in the dawn swoop but the exact number of those arrested was yet to be known. Those arrested are said to have been sent to Accra for screening. In a related development, Mr Baba Jamal, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that a number of NDC activists were picked up during the raid.

After the December 7 elections, results in all polling centres in the constituency were counted with the exception of the six polling stations, which were vandalized by the thugs, where the affected boxes were sent to the Akwatia police station.

However, after a visit to the Akwatia Police station by Mr David Kanga, the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) in-charge of operations, he ordered that the boxes should be conveyed to Koforidua. Meanwhile the EC had ordered a re-run of the parliamentary polls in the six affected polling stations on December 28 along side the presidential run-off.
