Economic Advisor to the Office of the Vice President, Prof. Mahmud Sharif Khalid
The Economic Advisor to the Office of the Vice President, Prof. Mahmud Sharif Khalid, has advised Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to step down from her position amid growing controversy and public dissatisfaction.
Speaking on ‘The Big Issue’ on Channel One TV on April 19, 2025, Prof. Khalid said that if he were in her position, he would have resigned out of respect and dignity, considering recent developments.
“If I were her, based on conventions and what we’ve observed over the years, I would have honorably resigned and walked away.
I wouldn’t even stay to ignite this drama,” he said.
His statements come amid ongoing debates about whether the Chief Justice should remain in office or be removed.
A recent poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics revealed that a majority of Ghanaians support her removal, citing concerns over recent judicial controversies and declining public confidence in the judiciary.
Prof. Khalid explained that it wouldn’t be unusual for the Chief Justice to resign, recalling that former Electoral Commissioner Charlotte Osei was also removed from a position with similar importance.
“The precedent was set a very long time ago, and I don’t understand why we are even discussing it now. That has happened before. It’s nothing new under the sun,” he added.
