Sheila Minka-Premo, the Convener for the Affirmative Action Bill Coalition, has called on Parliament to prioritize the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill.

According to her, the passage of the bill will be significant in promoting gender equality in Ghana.

“We urge Parliament to see this bill as a priority. We urge the Business Committee to table this bill daily so that it can go through consideration and be finalized. When the bill is passed and allowed to work, it will elevate Ghana before the community of nations as a very gender-friendly country,” Minka-Premo stated in an interview with Ghanaweb’s Nimatu Yakubu Atouyese.

She stressed the importance of swift action to ensure the bill's passage and implementation, highlighting the positive impact it would have on Ghana's international reputation.

“We urge them to make the bill a priority so we can get it passed and start working on its implementation, so that Ghana will start shining,” she added.

The Affirmative Action Bill aims to address gender imbalances and promote equal opportunities for all citizens, making it a crucial piece of legislation for Ghana's progress toward gender equality.

On June 14, the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Bill, 2024 was presented to Parliament by the Minister for Education on behalf of the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

Pursuant to Articles 103(3) and 106(4) of the 1992 Constitution and Order 237 of the Standing Orders of the House, the Bill was referred to the Committee on Gender, Children, and Social Welfare for consideration and report.

The Affirmative Action Bill aims to rectify the gender imbalance resulting from historic structural and social causes of gender inequality.

This legislation will also address the factors that threaten women's economic empowerment.

The passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Bill, 2024, will significantly contribute to the elimination of gender disparities in various sectors, ensuring a more equitable and inclusive society.

The bill's provisions would promote equal opportunities for women, thereby aiding their socioeconomic advancement.
