Renowned broadcast journalist Nana Aba Anamoah has slammed the National Peace Council for its response to the arrest and inhumane treatment of anti-galamsey protesters by the Ghana Police.
The National Peace Council, bowing to public pressure for its perceived silence on the ills in the country and the arrest of protesters, released a statement to address the issue.
In their statement, the council described the arrests as ‘alleged,’ which sparked public outrage on social media regarding the council's demeanor and seemingly unperturbed behavior.
“The National Peace Council is aware of the ongoing political situations in the country including alleged arrests of demonstrators on the streets of Accra and want to assure the public that @PeacecouncilGH is working with relevant stakeholders to find redress to the situation. We take the opportunity to assure all Ghanaians and the people of Ghana, that our commitment to safeguarding peace, justice, and the well- being of every Ghanaian remains unwavering,” the statement said.
Reacting to the council’s response to the ongoing issues, Nana Aba Anamoah used a proverb to criticize the council for putting out statements that lack substance instead of remaining silent.
“You’re a council of elderly people, so I’ll be respectful and say to you… When your words fail to add value, silence is the best response,” she said.
The Democracy Hub protesters were arrested by the police for unlawful acts.
The protesters aimed to demand an end to galamsey activities in the country and to protest against the poor governance and hardships under the ruling government.
The three-day protest, themed #OccupyJulorbiHouse, and #StopGalamsey, took a different turn on the second day when protesters blocked roads around the 37 intersections in Accra, obstructing traffic.
They removed police blockades, burned party paraphernalia, and took keys from a police van in an attempt to prevent the police from towing away their food truck.
