The suspended member of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, has described comments by the party’s General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie on Justice William Atuguba as “disgusting and appalling”.

According to Dr. Wereko-Brobbey, the party must condemn Sir John’s comments which he said, were disrespectful and insulting to the President of the nine Justices hearing the election petition.

The Supreme Court, on August 9, 2013, in a summons jointly signed by the Presiding Judge of the nine-member panel hearing the presidential election petition and the Registrar of the court, Mr. Justice William Atuguba and Mr. James Mensah respectively, formally summoned Mr. Adorye and Mr. Owusu-Afriyie, to answer contempt charges.

The court is asking the two to show why they “should not to be committed to prison for contempt for scandalizing the court, lowering the authority and credibility of the court in the eyes of the general public and inciting hatred and ill-will towards the first and second respondents”.

Mr. Owusu Afriyie has in a previous interview stated that he is unaware of the summons and will only comment when he is officially invited by the Supreme Court.

However, speaking on Joy FM Tuesday morning, the former CEO of the Volta River Authority stated that the leadership of the NPP must ensure that Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie popularly known as Sir John show “utmost remorse” when he appears before the Supreme Court.

He counseled the NPP scribe to go on his knees and beg the Supreme Court judges so that he is not jailed for his “distasteful comments”.

Mr. Owusu Afriyie and Hopeson Adorye are expected to appear in Court on Wednesday August 14.
