The Six Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has held the annual West African Soldiers’ Social Activity (WASSA) for its personnel, family and friends to make merry and take stock of the previous year’s activities.

The event, held at the Kamina Barracks in Tamale, was graced by representatives from sister security agencies in the region including the General Officer Commanding the Northern Command, Brigadier General Francis Ofori, and some traditional leaders.

It was to be held last year but was postponed on three occasions due to operational challenges.

Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Benjamin Boamah, Commanding Officer of the Six Infantry Battalion of the GAF, who spoke during the event, commended personnel of the Unit for their commitment and dedication to duty, which ensured continued peace in the region.

Lt Col Boamah said “Your selfless commitments contributed immensely towards the successful implementation of the road map for peace in Dagbon and the successful hosting of the 62nd Independence Anniversary Parade in Tamale, the first time outside the nation’s capital – Accra”.

He also commended personnel for maintaining high standard of discipline, saying, it was the bedrock of the Military.

Lt Col Boamah spoke about some of the challenges the Unit faced said the extreme weather conditions in the region were taken a toll on its accommodation units and some roads at the barracks, which were constructed just after the country’s independence were now dilapidated.

He said in view of the situation, “Command is consequently overburdened with spending a large percentage of our meager financial resources to maintain these facilities.”

He expressed gratitude to some citizens and organisations for supporting the Unit in cash and kind to renovate some of its facilities and appealed for more support as “The Unit looks forward to completing Justice Opoku Hall, renovation of the Magazine and the Quarter Guard”.

He entreated personnel of the Unit to remain disciplined and focus to achieve their set goals this year.
