Six die in two accidents at Dawhenya

Tema, April 28, GNA - Six persons died while 15 others sustained injuries in two separate accidents at Dawhenya on the Tema/Aflao Road. The injured are on admission at the Tema General Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have also been deposited at the hospital's morgue awaiting autopsy, Superintendent of Police Daniel Ansong Denkyi, Tema Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) Commander, told the GNA on Wednesday.

He said on Easter Monday at about 2100 hours, revellers were returning from the Comme-C Beach at Ningo onboard a Benz bus. Upon reaching a spot near the Oando Filling Station at Dawhenya, the driver who was believed to be drunk, ran into a stationary articulated truck loaded with cement. This led to the instant death of four of the passengers on board the bus, while 10 others including the driver, sustained serious injuries. He said that on Tuesday, April 26, at about 2100 hours, a tipper truck loaded with sand was joining the Tema-Aflao Highway from a by-pass linking Afienya to the road at Dawhenya. The truck crossed the highway, ran into a group of people instantly killing a 17-year old Adiki Tettehbi, a kenkey seller and 21-year old Leslie Bentum, a student of Central University College who was buying kenkey. Mr Denkyi said the body of the student was parted into two, the upper portion fell by the road side while her lower part went under the truck.

He said five passers-by who sustained injuries were taken to the Tema General Hospital.

The driver of the tipper truck, he said, was yet to be arrested by the Unit to help in investigations. The Tema MTTU Commander advised holiday makers to return to their destinations early, instead of waiting till late in the evenings. He also urged articulated and tipper truck drivers and owners to be maintenance-cautious, to prevent break-downs of their vehicles. Supt Damkyi said apart from these two accidents, his outfit also recorded a series of accidents during the Easter festivities. The accidents included one in Ashaiman which claimed one life. Three vehicular accidents which were non-fatal were also recorded on the Tema motor way during the period, he added. 28 April 11
