Sixteen-member GES Council inaugurated

Accra, Aug. 26, GNA - Mr. Alex Tettey-Enyo, Minister of Education on Wednesday called on members of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council to deal with the numerous challenges facing the educational system expeditiously.

The challenges include funding, industrial actions, transfer of heads of schools, promotions, supervision and indiscipline. Mr. Tetteh-Enyo made the call when inaugurating a 16-member GES Council in Accra.

He noted that following the reversion of the duration of the Senior High School System from four to three years, the task ahead of the members included the recommendation of policies that would improve quality and relevance, the efficiency of secondary education and training. The Council has Professor Agyewodin Adu Gyamfi, Acherensuahene, as Chairman.

Also on the Committee are, Mr. Robert Atuguba, Ms Cecilia Pomari, Nene Sackitey II, Mr. Francis Kojo Arthur, Ms Margaret Martey, and Mrs. Janet Ampadu-Fofie.

Other members are Mr. Godwin Sowah, Most Reverend Philip Naameh, Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, Dr Regina O. Adutwum, and Mr. Mohammed Amir Kpakpo Addo. The rest are Professor Paul Noble Buatsi, Mr. Samuel Bannerman Mensah, Mr Paul Mensah and Alhaji Salifu Seidu. Mr. Tetteh-Enyo said in view of the special focus of government on technical and vocational education for the nation, a Committee on Technical and Vocational Education had been established to guide policy makers and sensitize the public on the radical transformation of technical and vocational training, and called for collaboration between stakeholders.

He called on the members to adhere to the values of independence, objectivity, pro-activeness, cooperation, efficiency and transparency that had characterized deliberations of the previous council and uphold the ideals in the discharge of their mandate. Prof. Agyewodin Adu Gyamfi, said members were expected to institute measures to ensure qualitative and quantitative education for Ghanaians.
