Nkoranza (B/A), July 4, GNA - About 62 farmers in the Nkoranza District of Brong Ahafo, have appealed to the Minister of Roads and Transport to expedite action to pay them compensation for their farms destroyed through road construction.

The farmers are in communities alongside the Nkoranza-Ejura Road, which was awarded on contract for tarring.

Mr Samson Yaw Kudom, Nkoranza District Chief Farmer and one of the affected farmers told the Ghana News Agency at Nkoranza that they had made representations for the compensation since 2002 but they had not received any positive response.

He said the farmers lost crops such as cashew, cassava, maize, yam, oil palm and large tracts of land containing teak trees. The communities are Ayerede, Asuano, Ahyiayem, Pruso, Konkonso, Bredi Number one, Dandwa as well as Nkoranza and Asekye Krukese. Mr Kudom, who is also the Nkoranza District Chairman of the Agricultural Producers Council recalled when the former District Chief Executive, Mr Kwame Amporfo-Twumasi averted a planned attack by the farmers on workers of the construction company undertaking the project for not responding to their demands.

He said the farmers had sent several reminders to the company but had not received any reply.

Mr Kudom urged the Minister of Roads and Transport to consider their plight and intervene to ensure that adequate compensation was paid to them.
