POLICE at Akomadan in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti region have arrested a soldier, an instructor at the Achiase Jungle Warfare School in the Eastern region with quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

Sergeant Francis Tannor, 36, was captured discharging the alleged illicit substance in the bush after being pursued by the police from Daaso to Aburaso at about 5:30 pm last Wednesday.

Police dispossessed the suspect of four big sacks of the stuff when a search was conducted on him.

Corporal Godwin Ahianyo of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ashanti Regional Police Command told reporters the military instructor was apprehended in the company of Mohammed Moro, 25, his accomplice.

The suspects have so far not been charged but are currently in custody at the regional police command in Kumasi assisting in investigations.

Briefing journalists, Corporal Ahianyo said Sergeant Tannor, who was driving an Opel Caravan with registration number AS 4869 T, on realising that he was being chased, sped towards Aburaso in a bid to outsmart the police but luck eluded him as he was nabbed soon after.

The police, upon a tip-off, mounted a roadblock at Nkenkanso to intercept the car but the suspect disregarded the police signals and sped away towards Aburaso.

The police gave him a hot chase, attracting a number of residents of Aburaso who suspected the car was fleeing the police.

“They gave the police assistance to chase the suspect, culminating in his eventual arrest,” said Mr. Ahianyo.

The car later stopped; and Tannor and Moro were caught discarding the substance in a nearby bush. The suspected drug has been sent to Accra for testing.
