Soldier shoots 23-year-old man at Osu

Accra, Sept. 28, GNA 96 A 23-year-old man, who was mistaken for an armed robber and shot by a soldier at Osu in Accra last Tuesday, has died, his father said on Thursday.

Mr Mark Nortey was mistaken for an armed robber by the soldier, who shot him twice in the leg and once in the head along the Stadium Road on September 26, Mr Augustus Nortey, father of the deceased, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday.

He said Mark passed away on Wednesday.

Mr Nortey, who could not control his tears, denied that his son was an armed robber and appealed to Ghana Armed Forces to launch full investigations into circumstance surrounding to his son's death. =93Since the incident I have not been able to eat any food,=94 he said in tears.

Narrating how his son was killed Mr Nortey said in the evening of last Tuesday, his son after eating his dinner with his elder brother went to visit a friend known as Dery, aka 93Skipper=94, near the Stadium Road.

He said Dery invited him to dinner but the deceased declined saying he was full.

Ms Jessica Reindolf, a cousin of the deceased who took over the narration, as of Mr Nortey was in tears, alleged that the deceased suggested that they took a stroll and returned to eat the food together. On their way back, Dery attended to nature' call while Mark stood by waiting for him.

She said Mark saw an oncoming military patrol car and decided to run away. While running, they heard somebody shout 93stop there.=94 The soldier fired hitting his two legs and head.

The deceased fell and the military patrol car took him to the Korle-Teaching Hospital where he was admitted.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr James Annor, Osu District Police Commander, said the father of the deceased had lodged a complaint with the Police.

Mr Annor said the Police would commence their investigations into the matter.
