Some inhabitants at Afram Plains might not be counted - Census Officer

Ejura (Ash), March 28, GNA - Inhabitants of some communities, in the Afram Plains portion of the Ejura/Sekyedumase District, might not be counted during the two-week period of the National Population and Housing Census (NPHC), if it continued to rain at the present rate.

Mr Paul Adu Asirifi, Ejura-Sekyedumase District Census Officer, said to overcome the problem, it was necessary for the authorities to provide more vehicles, raincoats and Wellington boots to enable the enumerators to carry out their duties, even when it is raining.

Mr Asirifi was speaking to the Ghana News Agency, at Ejura, on Monday, on the challenges that have surfaced since the beginning of the census. He said the 72 Wellington boots, 61 raincoats and 24 bicycles so far supplied for the exercise were grossly inadequate, adding that there are 103 enumerators, 17 supervisors and two senior field supervisors.

There are, however, enough quantities of questionnaire, flashlights and batteries. Mr Asirifi called for the immediate release of funds to pay the commuting allowances of the enumerators and warned that any delay might cause some problems.

Major Ceasar Acheampong (rtd), District Chief Executive, appealed to all residents of the district to strive to make themselves available to be counted because of the importance of the census to national planning and development.
