Something would be wrong with my head if I said Kwame Nkrumah is not the founder of Ghana - Capt. Joel Sowu

Retired Ghanaian military officer, Captain Joel Sowu, has stated that the status of Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as the founder of the nation, is an indisputable fact.

According to him, it would be an act of insanity on his part to deny Nkrumah as the founder of Ghana or to undermine his impact on the country's development.

"If I, sitting here, say that Kwame Nkrumah was not the founder of this nation, that Kwame Nkrumah's developmental projects were not the best, something would have been wrong with my head," he said.

Despite his acknowledgment, Captain Joel Sowu (retired) highlighted some of the reasons that accounted for Nkrumah's overthrow in 1966, including his attempt to turn Ghana into a one-party state.

"The truth is, if you touch on the liberty of the individual, you touch on the liberty of all, and that is something I will not compromise," he stated.

Captain Joel Sowu was arrested in 1975 for an attempted coup against the then head of state, Ignatius Kutu Acheampong.

Before his arrest in 1975, Captain Joel Sowu single-handedly foiled a coup d'état against the National Liberation Council.

He recalled that he arrested the two persons involved alone and then went on to announce on GBC that the coup had been foiled.
