The Sefwi Debiso Police in the Bia District of the Western Region have arrested Kwesi Amoako, aka Foster, the leader of a syndicate who is bent on stealing and selling cocoa spraying chemicals.
A source at Bia told Daily Guide that Foster is the son of J.B Boampong, the former Bia constituency chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a brother of the current Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Michael Boampong.
Investigation by the paper revealed that for some time now, quantities of fungicides and other chemicals meant for distribution to cocoa farmers in the district have been disappearing and all efforts to get the thieves have proved futile.
Sources had it that yesterday, at about 4:30 pm, a car with registration number GW 5412Z, loaded with quantities of Ridonil fungicides used in spraying cocoa against black pod disease, was sighted at a filling station at Essam near Bia. The police were quickly informed and when they got to the filling station, two suspects whose names were only given as Yaw and Obour were arrested.
According to the source, when Foster heard of Yaw and Obour’s arrest, he rushed to the police station and confessed that he was the owner of the stolen fungicides so he was arrested and the first two suspects were granted police inquiry bail.
When contacted, ASP Samuel Entsuah Annan, Debiso District Police Commander, confirmed the story but explained that when his outfit got the information that quantities of the fungicide had been stockpiled at the filling station, it was rather Obour who directed the police to where the items were located.
He said when the police got to the filling station, Yaw, who was believed to be the suspected thief, took to his heels upon seeing the police. He added that it was later that Foster went to the police station and claimed ownership of eth stolen items.According to ASP Annan, Foster has been placed in police custody while investigations into the case go on.
