Accra, Sept 16, GNA - The Irish and Ghanaian Parliaments have agreed to work closely together to strengthen their democracies, a statement said in Accra on Tuesday.

The statement, issued from the Office of Parliament and signed by Mr Jones Kugblenu, Director of Public Affairs, said the two Houses took that decision at a meeting in Dublin last week when Ghana's Speaker of Parliament, Mr Peter Ala Adjetey paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons, Dr Rory O'Hanlan.

Mr Ala Adjetey, who was in Ireland on a twelve-day leave, used the opportunity to inspect facilities available to Members of Parliament in the discharge of their statutory duties.

The House currently has 166 members.

Mr Ala Adjetey, who has since returned to Ghana, called on his counterpart to lend a hand to Ghana's young democracy by providing facilities that would enhance the operation of its Parliament. The statement said Dr O'Hanlan promised to visit Ghana with some members of the Irish Parliament to study the current status of Ghana's Legislature and identify areas of possible cooperation and assistance. While in Ireland, Mr Ala Adjetey visited some publishing houses to solicit assistance to strengthen Ghana's Parliamentary library.
