Speaker swears in Akwatia, Tamale Central MPs

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has sworn in two new Members of Parliament; Bernard Bediako Baidoo representing Akwatia and Professor Alidu Seidu for Tamale Central.

Administering the oath of office, the Speaker urged them to learn on the job.

"To enable you discharge your duties, I will give you a hoe and cutlass. There is something to learn every day. You don't know it; you have to learn," he said.

Bernard Bediako Baidoo, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), won the Akwatia by-election held on September 2, 2025, following the death of the previous Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

He secured 18,199 votes, defeating Solomon Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 15,235 votes.

Professor Alidu Seidu, also of the NDC, was declared the winner of the Tamale Central constituency on September 23, 2025, succeeding Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed,

who lost his life in the recent fatal helicopter crash.

He is a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana and has previously served as the Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission.

The Third Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament marks the final parliamentary session for the year.

It is expected to feature the presentation of the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, in mid-November.
