Parliament has sent a wire message to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Chief Justice, appealing to both to expedite the trial of the murder suspect of the MP for Abuakwa-North, J.B. Danquah-Adu.
Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who is leading the crusade, told Members that the House of Representatives cannot sit aloof while justice for their departed colleague is being delayed.
In his closing remarks to the august House for the end of the First Meeting of Parliament, 2016, Hon. Bagbin, who is also the Leader Government Business, said the legislature cannot be satisfied with anything apart from ensuring that the perpetrators of the heinous crime are brought to book.
“Mr. Speaker, we are appealing to the Police and the Judiciary to expedite action on the matter in order to ensure that justice, true is achieved”, he noted.
Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, commenting on the issue also urged the Police to work assiduously to let Parliament know the circumstances that led to the death of the Abuakwa North MP who was a member of the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus.
He told the August House that the absence of relevant information on the departed colleague was not helping matters and therefore appealed to the men and women in black uniform to keep the legislature informed about the progress of their investigations.
“It is ironic that the security agencies in the immediate aftermath of that heinous crime hurried to Parliament for timeous briefings on which we commend them. Information has since dried up and the security agencies are not responding to our inquiries. Their silence is not helping matters at all”, he fumed.
J. B. Danquah-Adu was murdered in his Shiashie residence during the early hours of Tuesday, February 9, 2016.
Police investigations showed he suffered two stab wounds, one to his rib and the other to his abdomen.
The principal suspect has since been arrested and is currently being prosecuted before an Accra Magistrate Court.
His trial begun on Tuesday, February 16, 2016.
The final funeral rites of the late J. B. Danquah-Adu will be held at the forecourt of the State House on April, 15, 2016.
