A speeding commercial bus has crashed to death a man believed to be in his 30’s.
The bus with a registration number GN – 2336 – 10 hit and killed instantly the pedestrian on Monday evening around 7:30 pm.
An eyewitness, Kwadwo Minta, told Starr News that, the VIP bus fully loaded with passengers from Accra heading towards Kumasi wrongfully overtook some vehicles ahead and in the process, knocked and dragged the deceased who has been trapped under the vehicle.
Police at Teacher Mante rushed to the scene to collect the dismembered body of the deceased and deposited it at the Suhum Government Hospital morgue.
The driver of the bus was arrested to assist Police in investigations.
Communities along the Accra to Kumasi highways continue to suffer pedestrian fatalities hence, this calls for the construction of pedestrians overpass to guarantee the safety of residents.
Ghana continues to record high road fatalities over the past decade. The number of road users killed in the first quarter of 2019 saw 17.57% increase over figures for the first quarter of 2018.
Commuters and pedestrians killed increased from 592 in the first quarter of 2018 to 696 in the same period of 2019.
The number of males killed amounted to 506, comprising 62 males below 18 years and 444 males above 18 years.
Similarly, the number of females killed was 190, made up of 55 females below 18 years and 135 above 18 years.
The regional breakdown of deaths is Accra – 69, Tema – 38, Eastern – 108, Central – 45, Western – 38, Ashanti – 113, Volta – 34, Northern – 59, Upper West – 19, Upper East – 28, and Bono Ahafo – 145.
