Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams has outlined the transformative impact of the newly established Sports Fund, describing it as a major step toward improving accountability, infrastructure, and athlete support across the country.
Speaking in an interview with Joel Eshun on Ghanaweb's Sports Check program, the minister expressed confidence in the initiative.
He noted that the fund introduces a structured system aimed at addressing long-standing challenges in sports financing.
“There will be a higher level of accountability and much more transparency in how we manage sports and sports funding through the sports fund. It’s going to engender transparency, and so it will build more trust.”
The Minister emphasized that the fund will ensure resources are directed to critical areas, particularly athlete welfare.
“We spend in very critical and relevant areas and no area is left, including athlete welfare."
“Sometimes retired athletes completely die in poverty, unattended to, sometimes injured athletes are left on their own," he assured that the Sports Fund would address these issues, noting, “The fund is supposed to make sure that it identifies some of these situations and deal with them.”
On infrastructure, the minister highlighted significant gaps across the country, especially in athletics facilities.
“There are still a number of regions today that don’t have running tracks,” he said, pointing out that many athletes still train on basic, unstructured surfaces.
While multiple funding sources have already been identified, the minister indicated that additional revenue options could be explored in the future.
“The only area I didn’t go was a tax handle yet,” he said, adding that public confidence could drive its introduction. “When Ghanaians begin to see the benefits… they themselves will call for the introduction of a tax handle to increase the revenue sources.”
